Riab Water Cistern

The Riab Water Reservoir is one of the village’s most significant registered monuments and is listed on Iran’s National Heritage List under Registration No. 13169.

Located in the center of the historic village fabric, this Qajar-era structure stands as a testament to traditional desert water management.

Its architecture includes a large underground storage chamber covered by a domed roof, multiple windcatchers used to cool the water, and a stairway (Pashir) with stone steps through which water supplied by the qanat was accessed.

Until a few decades ago, the reservoir served as the village’s primary source of drinking water. Following the introduction of modern water networks, its importance gradually declined.

Recently, with support from the village administration and cultural heritage authorities, parts of the structure have been restored and transformed into one of Riab’s tourism attractions.

Today, visitors can explore its intelligent design and learn about traditional methods of water storage and conservation in desert environments.
